What Is Voice?

I've talked about it a lot lately in regards to AI, but what *is* it?

Voice is one of those ephemeral things. It’s not like a comma where you can see it, touch it, throw it at things (side note: buy stuffed commas or comma confetti…). It’s a feeling more than it is anything. It’s unique to every individual, and it’s not something that can be entirely recreated by anyone else. You can get close-ish, but it won’t be perfect. Much like pornography, a lot of the time the answer is “I know it when I see it,” but what if there’s more to it than that?

So how the hell do we define “voice”?
